These are the congratulatory words used to greet one another on New Year in Japan, expressing a mutual joy of the newly begun year. Many people in the West hold Christmas to be the most important celebration of the year, whereas in Japan the New Year’s celebrations, the Shōgatsu, bear the greatest significance. It is one of the most important traditional holidays of the entire year, has been celebrated for centuries and has developed its own unique traditions, which include the writing of New Year’s greeting cards, Nengajō.

Nengajō are sent to all acquaintances, relatives and friends in the weeks leading up to New Year, and are delivered on 1st January. By sending the card, one expresses a wish to keep in contact with the recipient throughout the coming year. Nengajō are a token of respect, and forgetting a card may lead to disappointments.
