Cherry Blossom Season

The Japanese cherry blossom is one of the most important symbols in Japanese culture. It signifies beauty, departure and transience. Cherry blossom season marks a highlight in the Japanese calendar and the onset of spring.

The first delicate flowers blossom in January, in Okinawa at the southern point of the Japanese archipelago. The blossom border then wanders north up to Hakkaido in late May. As soon as the Japanese have word of the blossoming cherry trees, they flock by the million to admire them.

The hanami “flower viewing” custom is a very old tradition.
